With a marked improvement over it's predecessor, the 503H, the Titleist 585 hybrid is every bit as forgiving as you would expect from any hybrid on the market today. It has since been replaced by the 909 series in the Titleist stable, but aside from a nominal improvement in overall looks and possibly feel the 585 holds up as a great choice in the "Players" category hybrid. Meaning, the ability to work a draw or fade has not been sacrificed by it's engineered forgiveness. At least for my swing, Dynamic Gold S300 shaft produces what I would call a mid-high trajectory, and consistently solid feel across the entire club face. As an added bonus, where the face and crown meet at the top of the club there is a thin, unpainted edge which very effectively hides any evidence of the all too common pop-up if you should tee the ball a bit too high for this somewhat shallow face. The face height does, however, aid in solid contact from tight lies and even fairway bunkers. I think it's a shame Titleist moved on to a new model so quickly when they had a winner already in the 585H!Read full review
This club is much more forgiving than any long iron you have ever hit. I took my 2 and 3 iron out of the bag and replaced them with this club. I got the 19* and it is a perfect replacement for those two long irons. Instead of hitting every other shot good with the long irons, every shot with this club is consistent and true. You can easily hit all sorts of shots with this club, I can choke down and hit it 180-190 or try to rip it and it goes 210-215. I can also shape the shot with an easy draw are a little fade with this club more easily then with a long iron. I am a 10 handicap and would suggest this club for the low to the highest of handicaps. Just wish I would have been playing this club the past few years and I would probably be a few shots lower for sure.
What I enjoy about this club is that I hit it as far as a 3 iron yet it carries the entire distance instead of releasing. This gives me more confidence to carry a hazard or a bunker on a long par 5. It did take a little getting used to at first but it is a pretty easy to hit club. I have the 19* with an Aldila VS Proto 80H with a stiff shaft. My driver swingspeed is about 109-115 and the shaft holds up pretty well. This club has a very solid feel to it and is surprisingly forgiving for the size of the clubface. I purchased it because I have always been a fan of Titleist equipment and am quite glad I gave this one a shot.
The Titleist 585H hybrid is a choice for the better player. This is because it is not set up to help the slicer, as many hybrids are, so the neutral face angle and weighting suits someone who wants to work the ball (draw and fade by choice). This should not put off a higher handicapper so long as they are aware. One critoical issue is shaft choice. The 585 comes in several different shafts - Aldila NV (green), Titleist 4175 (black) and True Temper Dynamic Gold (steel), and in 17, 19, 21 and 24 degree lofts in both Right and Left hand. You cal anslo order custom variations, with a long list of steel and graphite shafts, including VS Proto, UST V2, Project X and others, alternative grips and adjusted length and lie. The most important thing, as with any club, is to demo it. Any decent pro shop should have one available, and although it may not be precisely the spec you want, it should give an idea how it plays, and with advice from the pro, you should be able to choose the right spec for you.Read full review
A very nice club that is not hard to hit with very good distance and trajectory. The ball does not balloon like some other hybrids are prone to do. Very nice traditional lines and easy to align shots. The buttery feel when struck properly is just amazing! A real confidence builder and must have for those that don't strike 2 and 3 irons consistantly anymore. Very good out of heavy rough or thin lies. The workability is refreshing. Only down side is that if your miss is left it is compounded. Very good value!
