First of all, I'd like to tell you that if you find any erroneous material in this, please email me and I will be sure to correct it. Cleveland wedges have longtime been the standard for professionals. In the recent past, some other companies have produced very very well made wedges as well (vokey and mizuno). I will be talking about a few rarer ones though. If you haven't played with the Bronze or Berillyum Copper wedges in the past, they are much different than the typical forged or cast wedges. The cleveland BeCu came in a few different styles. Originally, it was made in the REG 485 model. It has a much softer feel than the cast wedges of its day, and it does not rust, because of its differing metals. Furthermore, there is no need for it to rust because of the makeup of these metals(you get plenty of spin regardless). Cleveland continued the BeCu line with the REG 588 wedges. Again, the same functions and benefits of the 485, but in a newer model. These wedges have a very dull and different looking finish as well. It looks like copper, and it feels very similar to copper as well. Its original stock finish will have a bit of a copper flake look to it, but as it is used, it will retain only a look of bare copper. Copper is a very soft metal, so the feel is very different, as I said before. The cleveland BRZ line was only available in the Tour Action 900 line. it came in a low bounce version as well. The 900 line has a bit smaller club head compared to the 588 too. The bronze (BRZ) has a similar feel to the BeCu. they are both very soft metals. Bronze is a mixture of aluminum and copper, and again will not rust. The BRZ has a matte looking finish when new, but this quickly wears away. It is important to remember this when seeing pictures of these wedges here on ebay. It wont look pretty in the pictures, and in fact, an older one that has all the original finish worn off will look more uniform and in better shape than a newer one. Remember this, because if most of the original finish is still intact, you're probably bidding on a lightly used wedge (even though it looks worse). Another way to tell is by looking at the paint in the bottom (sole) of the wedge on the inset "Cleveland." if all the paint is still intact, you're probably in good shape. There is a very important issue with these wedges that should be considered. Because of the soft metals used in them, they WILL wear out faster than your typical cast or forged steel wedges. In a differing aspect, they will probably help your game if you prefer a very soft feel. On my last note here, be very careful about "ported", "regrooved" and "refinished" wedges. A few companies will do this to typical wedges and demand a somewhat ridiculous price for them. Porting is simply drilling small holes in the lower portion of the wedge to reduce the weight. You could consider it as the opposite to adding lead tape to the back of the club. In reality, if you dont like the weight of your wedge (too heavy), you can have your local golf shop port your wedges for you, instead of paying hundreds for the job the professionals may have done to theirs. Regrooving helps the wedge put more spin on the ball if they have been excessively worn out, but again, not worth the price. Refinished wedges look beautiful, but be careful about how much you will pay for one of these. Performance doesnt increase with looks. I hope you find this guide helpful, and I appreciate any feedback.Read full review
I love this wedge! It is very clean looking at address and it is a dull gold color which makes it look great in the bag. I get a lot of spin on full and half, punch style shots. With the low bounce feature, this wedge makes hitting shots off hard pan and firm fairway lies much easier. In fact I almost look forward to when I get really tight lies within this clubs distance because I am able to really pick it clean and get the ball to bite fast.
The club feels quite a bit different than a Titleist Vokey or Nike Vr. It feels softer off the face and has a deeper sound at impact. The club customization is impeccable and looks great. Many people notice and ask about the club. Its a toss up between the Vokey and the BRZ for me. They both play extremely well.
