I have settled on this catagory of iron as the type that is the best for my game. I am 55 years old and currently a 4 handicap. I have used all types of irons in my 20 years of playing, mainly forged blades and players cb's. Because of this background I much prefer a head with a "better player" profile. ie. not too oversize, not too much offset or a thick topline. Those 3 features are very common in GI irons. I like the best of both worlds, in other words I enjoy the forgivness of GI irons but not the look, or often the feel. This newer iron catagory of giving lots of forgivness with a player profile is a big focus now for the industry. My opinion is Nike has done a fine job with this new, hi-tech design. I have used irons like the Srixon Z star, Cobra S2 forged and Mizuno mx 300 and the VR-S forged is superior to all of them. They have a very pleasing profile/shape at address with the only issue being that the 4 and 5 iron show a bit of the back of the pocket cavity. This is a normal feature of this type of iron however. The irons flat out feel great. Perhaps not sqishy soft as some forged irons, but with a solid feel at impact and really crsip on a solid strike. I reckon I can feel the thinner face. (these have a higher cor thin face). The ball really launches, almost like a hybrid but with a forged iron feel. The trajectory is fine, not too high and I was fankly surprised how the long irons did not go too high, (as I have found with the other sets mentioned here) but have a powerful piercing tradjectory that I would more expect from a blade style head. Ball speed off the face looks good and distances are as good or better than with other irons of similar lofts and type I have played. These have new high-tech grooves also and spin and stopping power seems very good. Forgivness is excellent, as you would expect from a design like this. Toe hits and thin hits still carry well and although they don't feel great on misshits the ball usually still hits the green. Centre hits are very pure feeling as I have said and I have hit some excellent approach shots with these irons. The cosmetics are very pleasing to my eye. They have a satin finish on the body of the iron, the cavity and "power bar" are pretty busy but the badging to me looks pretty slick and fits well the high tech design of this iron. Bottom line is if an iron is easy to use, looks great at address, feels very good to strike and performs very well it is a winner in my book. I have owned and used probably close to 100 irons sets yet I am not often compelled to write a review on them. These irons tick all the boxes for me. They help me play my best without any compromise in the way I like my irons to look and feel. Congratulations Nike. You have produced a real winner here.Read full review
Love the irons! I'm a 5 handicap and have played Hogan Apex's for 8 years. I've been considering a change from pure blades to one that will provide some forgiveness for those errant shots! At first I was concerned the "bulkier" look would be a challenge for me at address, but after receiving them I was pleasantly surprised the thinner top line provides more of a "blade" look and the "bulkier" part of the iron is well hidden. I've played 4 rounds with the Nike irons and the feel, workability, length is pretty much the same. My bad hits are so much better, the launch angle is much higher and the overall ball flight is far superior to anything else I've hit. I've tried the Mizuno's, AP1 and 2's, Ping I20's etc, and none of them, I BELIEVE, come close to the new Nike VR-S.
First of all when I received these clubs I couldn't believe the condition. They looked brand new. I changed the grips on them I put oversize Golf Pride grip on them which changed the entire feel of the club. The clubs are great, but different from what I an use to. I am trying to make the change from blades to cavity backs and they aren't as workable. I do love the extra distance that you get out of them. I'm not one for change, but I am going to keep trying.
Not only great looking clubs with a nice feel but are long too. I have been playing Callaway for a while but did not like the offset hossel so much. With this straigh hosel I can line up better. With the forged head I get more feedback and feel.
Great set of clubs!! I changed from Ping G10s to these and Love them!! The forged irons feel and sound great. I have a 10 handicap and find these clubs well suited to my game.
