The ball comes off the face hot. I have only played with it one time. I really like it and it's not fair to give it a review but I did anyway. I have hit it on the range and it has all the potential to be a great club. I like the adjustability with the shaft. I first bought the R9 driver and I loved it. This is why I bought the 3 wood, also I have now purchased the 5 wood. I have the complete set 1,3,and 5. I have the 2009 Taylormade RAC Irons. The only thing I don't have that is made by Taylormade is my Putter. Taylormade products are the best line of clubs you can buy. I would not have anything else, and I have had them all.
This is my second R9, the first was damaged in a car accident.. Anyhow, the adjustment was the original reason I purchased it. After correcting a swing issue I have found I simply prefer the club; the fit to my eye, the weight, the swing feel just grew on me. I tried the burner and several other clubs when contemplating its replacement, but I really just felt quite confident with the club. It is not any longer, straighter than other clubs which I also hit well, it just feels better. Audibly, at impact it has a tell-tale indication of the quality of the strike. I play it set to neutral which allows one to shape a shot to the right or left without over emphasizing a swing path which as every one knows means a miss, and then an adjustment problem back to your normal path, i.e., you simply have less swing thoughts when fading or drawing. Good luck.Read full review
I went to the driving range at least two times, hit four buckets of balls and played only one round of golf with the R9 3 and 5 fairway woods. The stiff flex is really stiff. Lucky for me, It came with a regular flex shaft and a stiff flex shaft to interchange. I recommend you demo a R9 fairway wood before you buy it. I have the Taylormade Burners 07 woods in my bag and they are a little more forgiving. However If you have the right shatf flex and a decent swing, I believe it would be a great club for you. I will eventually switch to the the the R9 fairway woods to match my R9 Driver with 10.5 degrees with stiff flex.
I own the R9 460cc driver so, I wanted the matching 3 fairway wood. What I particularly like about this model is the versatility of the shafts. The R9, R11 and R11s shafts are all compatible with this clubhead. This gives you a wide range of options for fueling this fairway wood. I already had the torque wrench, so my choice was to purchase a couple of different shafts depending on the type of ball flight that I need. On nice clear days I install my Fujikura MOTORE F1 60g shaft when I want a higher ball flight, or on windy days I'll install my Aldila RIP Phenom R11S 70g shaft when I want to swing easy and have a lower more penetrating ball flight. Either way its nice to have this flexibility at a decent price. Just remember you cannot make changes to the club after you start your round.Read full review
Very solid feel, much more weighted than previous 300 series steel head. I like this feel but know I would have liked the TP version better as the upgraded shafts seem to be a bit more responsive in the kick. I used to snap hook the much lighter low kick point shafts on the 300 series steel heads and hit the ball too high at times. The mid kick on these shafts keep the ball lower, with a more penetrating ball flight and more roll. Less carry on the lower shots though, obviously, but even with ball placement, tougher to get up high in the air. Guess it just takes some getting used to...but overall, the most solid fairway wood out there. You can swing very aggressively with the standard stock Motore 65G shaft and it will hold up very well with a 105-110mph swing.
